Implementing energy management systems in the Republic of Belarus, as well as their certification is carried out on a voluntary basis. The main purpose of the energy management system is to apply a systematic approach to achieve continuous improvement of energy performance and the energy management system.

The requirements for creation, implementation, maintenance and improvement of the energy management system are specified in the governmental standard of the Republic of Belarus GOST ISO 50001-2021 "Energy management systems. Requirements with guidance for use".

The Resolution No. 65 of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus of February 1, 2020 "On Amendments to Decisions of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus on Energy Saving" provides an opportunity for enterprises that have implemented and certified energy management systems to reduce the amount of works when carrying out energy examinations (energy audits), which in turn will reduce the cost of energy audits. It is  expected that this measure would stimulate enterprises to implement these systems.

Organizations of Gosstandart systematically provided enterprises with methodological and consulting assistance on the issues of implementing energy management systems. Such systems are currently certified in 16 organizations.
